This print was designed for inclusion in a print portfolio and exhibition about "cultural memory, identity and exchange" curated by Mariana Astete entitled Culture Currency.
My print was specifically about the challenge and beauty of raising bi-racial/bi-cultural children. Initially, I thought of playing directly off the name of the exhibition and exploring their duality as two sides to a coin. But after wrestling more with the idea—and through some helpful conversations with my kids—I realized it's not so "clean" as that. So the idea of representing the merging of their Filipino and American backgrounds through a coin that was cut and welded seemed more apt.
*The portfolio was exhibited at the University of South Dakota Gallery (Vermillion, SD) and at the University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA).
